7 streams of income and Artist Manager Roles

Cappreccieo Scates is one of the leading players in the music publishing game. He is the author of the book 10 Steps to Successfully Managing Recording Artists. He is also a former employee of SESAC and held the position of Senior Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations. He has worked with Sony Music, Universal, and Atlantic Records. A lot of new coming artists and managers do not know the ins and outs of music publishing because they are only looking for a record deal. I have read Cappreccieo Scates book and feel that it is a must have for aspiring artists looking for management and managers looking for guidance in the music industry.

The YouTube video explains the 7 streams of income when it comes to music publishing. The 7 streams of income are mechanical, performance, synchronization, digital, new media, derivatives, grand rights, and print royalties. These 8 areas are the ways that people get paid in the music industry. These 7 assets are the bread and butter of the music industry.

The second video deals with artist manager’s role in the music industry.  George Howard and Jeff Dorenfield talk abouthow the manager and the artist have a role in the agreement between the two.The artist is to create and the manager handles the business. This type of relationship is like a marriage. Management is in the relationship until the end of time. Managers can be replaced, but their contracts cannot be unless it is in writing. I am a believer that everyone has a role to play. Know your role. An artist should have a direction t hat they want their career to go and should not solely depend on the manager to provide the artist a career.

If there are conflicts then there should be a clause in the contract between the two that deals with how the relationship will be resolved. An artist should understand that the manager is only there for them and should have their best interest at hand. The process of finding a good manger requires patience.
